Cornwall Campuses Achieve Gold Cycle Friendly Employer Award

January 15, 2024

Both Penryn and Falmouth campus have achieved Gold Cycle Friendly Employer awards, administered through the national Cycle Friendly Employer program and run by Cycling UK. The gold award is the highest standard available and demonstrates to students and staff the active travel and infrastructure on offer for cyclists.

Based on our climate emergency declarations in 2019 and a focus on supporting student and staff’s physical and mental wellbeing, active travel such as cycling and walking poses a lot of positive opportunities.

Oliver Milliner, Head of Sustainability at FX Plus, said: “the benefits are crystal clear when it comes to taking on active travel measures commuting to and from campuses. Active travel measures such as cycling not only supports personal health, but is a direct emission reduction initiative, reduces traffic congestion in the local community and also helps to save money”.

Oliver also highlights, “this award doesn’t deter from the fact there are still areas in which we can improve upon, in terms of service level, infrastructure and communications to encourage the uptake of active travel. Based on a survey we ran for staff and students in June 2023, 56% of staff and 11% of students are driving alone to and from campuses. This equates to approximately 54% of total commuting emissions each year. Only 4% of staff and 7% of students use cycling as their main mode of transport to and from campus.

“The main pieces of feedback from the survey are that people do not feel safe cycling on the roads and this is deterring them from getting out of vehicles”.

Oliver adds, “based on the survey figures, there needs to be a focus on phasing away from single car occupancy. We’re in the process of finalising our 2030 Sustainable Travel Plan to address key areas for improvement”. The new plan aligns with Cornwall Council’s 2030 Transport Plan which effectively focuses on modal shift as well.

The gold award achievement supports FX Plus and the universities of Falmouth and Exeter, by providing a roadmap to achieve continuous improvement. For any questions or queries on travel, please email sustainability@fxplus.ac.uk.

Biodiversity Updates 2022-2023

January 9, 2024

The Biodiversity, Sustainability and Ground and Gardens Teams have been hard at work to achieve some blooming good biodiversity outputs for 2022-2023. Abhishek Dixit, Biodiversity Project Officer at FX Plus, has reported a total of 1,152 wildflower plugs planted in 2023. In fact, we’ve planted a total of 1,572 plants since March 2022.

We also observed 5,145 square metres of grassland enhanced by wildflower seedling and turf planting. With 1,940 square metres of mixed evergreen and deciduous woodland enhanced by invasive plant removal and tree planting.

In addition to the daily contributions of our green fingered colleagues, some of this planting was also thanks to our weekly Campus Conservation Volunteering Sessions which are held every Wednesday lunchtime from 12-2:30pm, and last year an impressive 51 sessions were delivered for students, staff, and the general public. For full details about upcoming sessions visit our ‘Events on Campus‘ page.

All these activities are already helping wildlife on campus, as seen through new wildlife monitoring events. The UK Butterfly Monitoring Scheme is one such example, whereby we contributed the recording of 545 individual butterflies from 14 different species.

In total, our Biodiversity Project Officer has led 17 Wildlife Walks, participated in 12 Outreach Events and engaged 225 participants through these biodiversity events.

To continue to build on this work, we have a number of wildlife monitoring events planned for 2024, such as the RSPB Big Bird Watch events which will be held on both our Penryn and Falmouth campuses this month (26 and 27 January 2024), and a BeeWalk, Bat surveys, bird monitoring programme, and potentially a freshwater quality survey for our streams and ponds. Keep a look out for these future events on the FX Plus website here.

Winning at Waste

January 9, 2024

As we look back on December, it’s often a month of excess and overconsumption. It’s the month which creates a mountain of waste and recycling for us to drown in until the first bin collection after the festive holidays. Many of us will have sifted through the sacks of wrapping paper, sorted through plastic packaging and wrestled with a record number of cardboard boxes – it’s a tedious task and one which gets little recognition!

This is not the case on campus. Your noble waste and recycling efforts have not gone unnoticed. In fact, we can look back on 2023 and celebrate some waste related wins. Dylan Jones, Waste and Recycling Officer at FX Plus, has diligently been calculating what we throw away and has reported increases in recycling and a reduction in overall waste generated on Penryn campus when compared with last year’s figures.

Here are some 2022/2023 statistics (when compared with 2021/2022):

  • Food waste recycling has increased by 38%
  • All recycling has increased by 5.3%
  • All general waste generated on Penryn campus has reduced by 7%
  • Over 10,000 tetra pak cartons have been recycled since last January (2023), and we now average around 1,000 tetra pak cartons recycled each month!

Waste and recycling are ongoing challenges, but the above statistics are an encouraging indication that our campus community is moving in the right direction, an endeavour that which takes us closer towards our sustainability goals and reduces our negative impacts on the environment. Well done, you! Keep up the good work.

Students, please help Falmouth fire station!

November 2, 2023

Bonfire night celebrations are just around the corner, and the Falmouth Fire Brigade has been in touch with some pointers to help you celebrate safely. We do not want you or anyone else to end the night in accident and emergency!

The advice is to not attempt your own bonfire or firework display and here’s why:

Reasons not to have a fire on the beach:

  • Local byelaws (you can be fined, and the beaches have CCTV)
  • Fires leave hot ashes on the sand and remain hot for 48hrs when buried (young children and dogs will be using the beach the next morning and they both like to dig in the sand)
  • Nails and screws within the wood will become exposed and buried (children and dogs love to dig)
  • Other people may stumble or trip into the fire

Reasons not to fire fireworks from the beach:

  • Unsafe/untrained firing of fireworks (without a fixed firing station you cannot control the direction it launches)
  • Behind the beaches are people’s homes and businesses (the wind direction may take the fireworks into these areas and cause fires)
  • Large numbers of people gather around the beaches on bonfire night (an uncontrolled firework may go into a crowd of people and cause life threatening injuries)

We would also like to remind all campus users that fireworks are banned on both Penryn and Falmouth campus. Instead, we encourage you to attend a licenced bonfire and fireworks display. Below, we have listed three of the largest local ones that you may like to visit.

Truro

Friday 3 November – 5pm – Tremorvah Playing Field

Falmouth Firefighters Social and Welfare Club, and members of Falmouth Cricket Club will be hosting this year’s event at Falmouth Cricket Ground, Trescobeas Road.  Gates open at 6.00p.m for a 7pm start.

Chaos Radio will be providing the entertainment and there will be burgers, jacket potatoes, hog roast and doughnuts available to purchase. Entry is £5 for adults and £2.50 for children. Follow the link for full details.

Pool

Sunday 5 November – 4pm – Heartlands

Climate Wall Comes to Cornwall

October 23, 2023

An interactive light projection “The Climate Wall” is coming to Cornwall, Penryn Campus, from 27 November – 1 December 2023. The art installation represents a moment of reflection in the lead up to COP28 in Dubai, United Arab Emirates, and will serve as a public record and reminder of how we feel about Climate Change here and now. Its aim is to encourage reflection on climate change issues, sharing responses and practical recommendations for individual and collective action.

The Climate Wall is fully funded by the University of Exeter and will be hosted on Penryn campus in collaboration with Falmouth University, FX Plus and the SU. Just as the climate and ecological emergency is a collective issue that we all face, the wall invites all those within our community to participate and share your responses.

Climate messaging provided by university climate scientists, academics and students will be projected onto an external wall via a projector which will be activated when people pass by, making the words ‘dance’ about the wall accompanied by film. You can add your own responses to the messaging on the wall via a QR code and your mobile phone, or in person by locking onto a word and moving it up the wall. There will also be lines of poetry on the wall in different languages, from the Green Futures COP projects. It needs darkness to run so will operate from 4pm – 9pm each evening in the outside space between the Stannary and the SU on Penryn Campus, which is jointly owned by the Universities of Exeter and Falmouth.

To celebrate the Climate Wall coming to Cornwall, staff at Falmouth University and FX Plus have arranged a complimentary collection of displays and activities which encourage visitors to reflect, connect and act on issues affecting climate change. These shall be located in the balcony area of the library from 27 November – 5 January 2024, and includes an exhibition of biodiversity specimens and a ‘Reflection Space’, where you can talk about your emotional response to the climate emergency, reflect upon what you have seen and place any action you wish to take upon the ‘Pledge Tree’.

There will also be a screening of a short film titled ‘A Day in the Boots’. The film features gardener Alasdair Garnett at FX Plus, who tends the grounds and gardens of the Tremough Estate (now known as Penryn Campus) and Falmouth campus. It is a story of how small local changes can have a large impact on our environment and reflects on an individual’s sense of place and the role you can play within it. An animated timeline about the history of Penryn Campus and digital content showcasing green sustainable societies and activities will also be shown.

In addition to this, guests will be able to add information to the ‘Action Collage’, which will become a collaborative visualisation of the individual, community and global action taking place around us. The Action Collage will provide information on student-led and local green societies that visitors can connect with to act on the climate and ecological crisis.

On the day of the Climate Wall’s arrival (27 Nov), from 5pm – 6:30pm, there shall be a special launch event in the space outside the Stannary and the SU. Martin Siegert, Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Cornwall) University of Exeter, will give a brief introduction. The Climate Wall and Launch event is open to all staff, students, and the public to attend, you are encouraged to interact with the wall, have fun and post your own message. To find out more and reserve your place at the launch, follow the link to Eventbrite.

New Photovoltaic System Set to Save 149 Tonnes of Carbon

October 19, 2023

Our new Photovoltaic (PV) system is now fully connected and operational on Penryn Campus. The latest addition of PV panels which completes the system has successfully been installed on the Daphne Du Maurier building (October 2023). These panels are in addition to the PV panels which were installed on the roof of Peter Lanyon and the Sports Centre in July 2023.

In total, we have fitted more than 1700 new panels to the roofs of Daphne Du Maurier, Peter Lanyon and the Sports Centre. These will add to existing panels already installed on campus and save energy and money for future investments and improvements. The new PV system has a total capacity of 775 kW with an estimated 700,000 kWh per year generated.

PV panels, also known as solar electricity panels, capture the sun’s energy and convert it into renewable electricity that we can use across Penryn Campus. Our high-tech PV system, which spans across three buildings, will reduce carbon emissions by 149 tonnes each year. An estimated £125,934 annual cost saving is also predicted. Calculations are based on 18p/kWh but savings are likely to be much greater than this whilst the current unit rate continues to rise to around 30p/kWh or more.

So far (July 2023), we have recorded a 55% reduction in our energy emissions (electricity & gas) against our 2005/2006 baseline on Penryn Campus (based on per meter squared). The main projects contributing towards this success include the installation of the PV panels, as well as other sustainable modifications such as LED and electrical upgrades, analytics, and sub-metering upgrades.

These modifications and savings are a testament to the collaborative and ongoing efforts of both the Estates and Sustainability Teams, who continue to find ways to introduce green initiatives, improve efficiency and reduce our carbon footprint.

Civic University Agreement signed for Cornwall and the Isles of Scilly

October 4, 2023

Falmouth University and the University of Exeter have signed a Civic University Agreement with Cornwall Council, the Council of the Isles of Scilly and the Cornwall and Isles of Scilly Integrated Care Board (ICB).

This civic strategy brings the two universities together with the councils and the ICB to work in collaboration to support the region’s growth and prosperity.

Through the Agreement, the universities will explore with local partners how their facilities and specialist resources, teaching and skills, and research and knowledge exchange can be leveraged for the benefit of the region’s businesses and communities.

The agreement identifies four priority areas for action, aligned with the Isles of Scilly’s Corporate Plan and Together We Can: The Cornwall Plan 2020-50, which was shaped with the input of thousands of Cornwall residents. The priorities are:

  • Green Futures Cornwall and Isles of Scilly: sustainable food, land and seas and a creative carbon zero economy, leaving more nature for future generations.
  • Healthy Futures Cornwall and Isles of Scilly: a shared commitment to create healthy, safe and resilient communities where people live well for longer.
  • Fair Futures Cornwall and Isles of Scilly: Supporting thriving places with decent homes, and strengthening equality, education and entrepreneurship with opportunities for lifelong learning and skills development
  • Creative Futures Cornwall and Isles of Scilly: Celebrating the region’s cultural heritage and supporting partners’ shared goals for a leading rural creative economy and a digital revolution for sustainable living.

Following the signing of the Agreement, Professor Emma Hunt, Vice-Chancellor of Falmouth University said, “The two universities are deeply committed to their role as anchor institutions in Cornwall. Both leaders in our different specialisms, working in close collaboration with our local partners, we are looking forward to exploring new ways to combine our strengths, target our activity and to achieve more together for Cornwall and the Isles of Scilly.”

Deputy Vice Chancellor, Cornwall at the University of Exeter, Professor Martin Siegert, said “By aligning our shared civic objectives with the Cornwall Plan, we can make a real difference on the issues that matter most to people in Cornwall. From the housing crisis to the climate emergency, in health, education and by harnessing our culture and heritage to drive economic growth, we are pleased to be collaborating with our local partners.”

The Agreement commits the universities to an annual programme of community engagement to ensure that the work developed and delivered under the umbrella of the Agreement provides real impact for Cornwall and the Isles of Scilly’s people and communities.

Linda Taylor, Leader of Cornwall Council added, “Cornwall is very fortunate to have two pioneering and complementary universities delivering world-leading teaching and research in the Duchy. This Agreement is a fantastic framework around which we can meaningfully shape our work together, driving focussed activity through an annually agreed set of projects that have been identified and developed with local people.”

Robert Francis, Chairman of the Council of the Isles of Scilly said, “We are delighted to be a signatory to this Civic University Agreement. The Isles of Scilly has experience of working with staff and students from both institutions on Knowledge Exchange activity and therefore we recognise the value that more collaboration can provide on strategic areas of priority for us and the community.”

John Govett, Chair of NHS Cornwall and Isles of Scilly Integrated Care Board, said: “Providing the best care as close to home as possible is one of the core priorities for our NHS, so we are delighted to have signed an agreement that includes a shared commitment to create healthy, safe and resilient communities where people live well for longer.

“We look forward to working with the two universities, and our council partners, on new and innovative ways to provide a healthier future for the people of Cornwall and the Isles of Scilly”.
