Climate Wall Comes to Cornwall

October 23, 2023

An interactive light projection “The Climate Wall” is coming to Cornwall, Penryn Campus, from 27 November – 1 December 2023. The art installation represents a moment of reflection in the lead up to COP28 in Dubai, United Arab Emirates, and will serve as a public record and reminder of how we feel about Climate Change here and now. Its aim is to encourage reflection on climate change issues, sharing responses and practical recommendations for individual and collective action.

The Climate Wall is fully funded by the University of Exeter and will be hosted on Penryn campus in collaboration with Falmouth University, FX Plus and the SU. Just as the climate and ecological emergency is a collective issue that we all face, the wall invites all those within our community to participate and share your responses.

Climate messaging provided by university climate scientists, academics and students will be projected onto an external wall via a projector which will be activated when people pass by, making the words ‘dance’ about the wall accompanied by film. You can add your own responses to the messaging on the wall via a QR code and your mobile phone, or in person by locking onto a word and moving it up the wall. There will also be lines of poetry on the wall in different languages, from the Green Futures COP projects. It needs darkness to run so will operate from 4pm – 9pm each evening in the outside space between the Stannary and the SU on Penryn Campus, which is jointly owned by the Universities of Exeter and Falmouth.

To celebrate the Climate Wall coming to Cornwall, staff at Falmouth University and FX Plus have arranged a complimentary collection of displays and activities which encourage visitors to reflect, connect and act on issues affecting climate change. These shall be located in the balcony area of the library from 27 November – 5 January 2024, and includes an exhibition of biodiversity specimens and a ‘Reflection Space’, where you can talk about your emotional response to the climate emergency, reflect upon what you have seen and place any action you wish to take upon the ‘Pledge Tree’.

There will also be a screening of a short film titled ‘A Day in the Boots’. The film features gardener Alasdair Garnett at FX Plus, who tends the grounds and gardens of the Tremough Estate (now known as Penryn Campus) and Falmouth campus. It is a story of how small local changes can have a large impact on our environment and reflects on an individual’s sense of place and the role you can play within it. An animated timeline about the history of Penryn Campus and digital content showcasing green sustainable societies and activities will also be shown.

In addition to this, guests will be able to add information to the ‘Action Collage’, which will become a collaborative visualisation of the individual, community and global action taking place around us. The Action Collage will provide information on student-led and local green societies that visitors can connect with to act on the climate and ecological crisis.

On the day of the Climate Wall’s arrival (27 Nov), from 5pm – 6:30pm, there shall be a special launch event in the space outside the Stannary and the SU. Martin Siegert, Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Cornwall) University of Exeter, will give a brief introduction. The Climate Wall and Launch event is open to all staff, students, and the public to attend, you are encouraged to interact with the wall, have fun and post your own message. To find out more and reserve your place at the launch, follow the link to Eventbrite.

New Photovoltaic System Set to Save 149 Tonnes of Carbon

October 19, 2023

Our new Photovoltaic (PV) system is now fully connected and operational on Penryn Campus. The latest addition of PV panels which completes the system has successfully been installed on the Daphne Du Maurier building (October 2023). These panels are in addition to the PV panels which were installed on the roof of Peter Lanyon and the Sports Centre in July 2023.

In total, we have fitted more than 1700 new panels to the roofs of Daphne Du Maurier, Peter Lanyon and the Sports Centre. These will add to existing panels already installed on campus and save energy and money for future investments and improvements. The new PV system has a total capacity of 775 kW with an estimated 700,000 kWh per year generated.

PV panels, also known as solar electricity panels, capture the sun’s energy and convert it into renewable electricity that we can use across Penryn Campus. Our high-tech PV system, which spans across three buildings, will reduce carbon emissions by 149 tonnes each year. An estimated £125,934 annual cost saving is also predicted. Calculations are based on 18p/kWh but savings are likely to be much greater than this whilst the current unit rate continues to rise to around 30p/kWh or more.

So far (July 2023), we have recorded a 55% reduction in our energy emissions (electricity & gas) against our 2005/2006 baseline on Penryn Campus (based on per meter squared). The main projects contributing towards this success include the installation of the PV panels, as well as other sustainable modifications such as LED and electrical upgrades, analytics, and sub-metering upgrades.

These modifications and savings are a testament to the collaborative and ongoing efforts of both the Estates and Sustainability Teams, who continue to find ways to introduce green initiatives, improve efficiency and reduce our carbon footprint.

Civic University Agreement signed for Cornwall and the Isles of Scilly

October 4, 2023

Falmouth University and the University of Exeter have signed a Civic University Agreement with Cornwall Council, the Council of the Isles of Scilly and the Cornwall and Isles of Scilly Integrated Care Board (ICB).

This civic strategy brings the two universities together with the councils and the ICB to work in collaboration to support the region’s growth and prosperity.

Through the Agreement, the universities will explore with local partners how their facilities and specialist resources, teaching and skills, and research and knowledge exchange can be leveraged for the benefit of the region’s businesses and communities.

The agreement identifies four priority areas for action, aligned with the Isles of Scilly’s Corporate Plan and Together We Can: The Cornwall Plan 2020-50, which was shaped with the input of thousands of Cornwall residents. The priorities are:

  • Green Futures Cornwall and Isles of Scilly: sustainable food, land and seas and a creative carbon zero economy, leaving more nature for future generations.
  • Healthy Futures Cornwall and Isles of Scilly: a shared commitment to create healthy, safe and resilient communities where people live well for longer.
  • Fair Futures Cornwall and Isles of Scilly: Supporting thriving places with decent homes, and strengthening equality, education and entrepreneurship with opportunities for lifelong learning and skills development
  • Creative Futures Cornwall and Isles of Scilly: Celebrating the region’s cultural heritage and supporting partners’ shared goals for a leading rural creative economy and a digital revolution for sustainable living.

Following the signing of the Agreement, Professor Emma Hunt, Vice-Chancellor of Falmouth University said, “The two universities are deeply committed to their role as anchor institutions in Cornwall. Both leaders in our different specialisms, working in close collaboration with our local partners, we are looking forward to exploring new ways to combine our strengths, target our activity and to achieve more together for Cornwall and the Isles of Scilly.”

Deputy Vice Chancellor, Cornwall at the University of Exeter, Professor Martin Siegert, said “By aligning our shared civic objectives with the Cornwall Plan, we can make a real difference on the issues that matter most to people in Cornwall. From the housing crisis to the climate emergency, in health, education and by harnessing our culture and heritage to drive economic growth, we are pleased to be collaborating with our local partners.”

The Agreement commits the universities to an annual programme of community engagement to ensure that the work developed and delivered under the umbrella of the Agreement provides real impact for Cornwall and the Isles of Scilly’s people and communities.

Linda Taylor, Leader of Cornwall Council added, “Cornwall is very fortunate to have two pioneering and complementary universities delivering world-leading teaching and research in the Duchy. This Agreement is a fantastic framework around which we can meaningfully shape our work together, driving focussed activity through an annually agreed set of projects that have been identified and developed with local people.”

Robert Francis, Chairman of the Council of the Isles of Scilly said, “We are delighted to be a signatory to this Civic University Agreement. The Isles of Scilly has experience of working with staff and students from both institutions on Knowledge Exchange activity and therefore we recognise the value that more collaboration can provide on strategic areas of priority for us and the community.”

John Govett, Chair of NHS Cornwall and Isles of Scilly Integrated Care Board, said: “Providing the best care as close to home as possible is one of the core priorities for our NHS, so we are delighted to have signed an agreement that includes a shared commitment to create healthy, safe and resilient communities where people live well for longer.

“We look forward to working with the two universities, and our council partners, on new and innovative ways to provide a healthier future for the people of Cornwall and the Isles of Scilly”.

New Food and Drink Options on Campus

October 4, 2023

It is the beginning of the new academic year and with it comes a feast of tasty new grab and go lunch options at Penryn campus. For 2023/24, the Food and Drinks team have opened two new outlets: The Coffee Stop and the Deli Bar.

The Coffee Stop, situated in the Upper Stannary, provides fast coffee, cold drinks, light snacks, sandwiches, fruit, pastries, and confectionary, to keep you energised and on the go. One of the highlights here is their Grumpy Mule coffee, the “Award Winning Coffee that is meticulously sourced, ethically traded and deliciously grumpy” their website claims. Sustainability matters and this is one such new supplier that has been selected after going through the FX Plus responsible procurement process.

In the lower Stannary, the Deli Bar has reopened to serve a variety of fresh, artisan sandwiches prepared daily by our in-house catering team, as well as a range of, snacks, and (of course) more coffee! The ever popular £2 Vegan Hot Pot has returned in the Stannary, and a new vegetarian and vegan menu has launched in the Sustainability Café. This includes seasonal salad dishes.

On Falmouth campus, a new salad bar has opened in the Fox Café and students can now purchase lunchtime hot meal vouchers (£6 per meal) for both the Stannary and Fox Café. Buy ten meal vouchers and get two free meals provided. For more information and to buy, visit the FX Plus Online Store. For those conscious of their climate impact, there are new Klimato menus too and a weekly menu of budget friendly options.

On Tuesdays and Thursdays, street food vans are back at the Penryn campus. This includes Bangers on the Go who serve handcrafted burgers, gourmet hotdogs, slow roasted BBQ Pulled pork, vegetarian options, dirty nachos and sides.

There is an abundance of mouth watering meal options to tempt you on campus, be sure to try them and tell us what you think using the feedback kiosks and QR codes in our cafés and Shops. When you tell us what you think of your visit, you will be in with a chance of winning a £50 voucher for a local or online retailer. The prize draw competition runs during term-time only, is open to our entire campus community, and we will be drawing a prize winner every month – best of luck!

Hedgehogs Return to Campus

October 2, 2023

For the past couple years, the Grounds and Sustainability Teams have been working hard to create a safe haven for native wildlife on campus. The results have been exciting to observe, and we are happy to report that we now have some regular hedgehogs that seem to have made themselves at home!

Both juvenile and adult hedgehogs have been spotted in and around Glasney Student Village, catching bugs under streetlamps and scurrying through hedges. FX Plus Biodiversity Project Officer, Abhishek Dixit, says that it is a positive indication that there may have been active nests on campus over the summer.

Sadly, elsewhere hedgehog populations have been declining due to shrinking wild spaces and hedgerows, the use of pesticides leading to a reduction of available food, deaths due to road traffic, climate change leading to disturbance in their natural life cycle and food availability and littering of their natural habitat. It is fantastic to see that hedgehogs are making a comeback and are returning to Penryn campus.

Hedgehogs play a critical role in ecosystems of the UK. Being avid insect eaters, they help control populations of pests and insects that would otherwise severely damage plant life of forests, gardens, and farms.

Through our biodiversity initiatives, we are working towards maintaining and enhancing a well-connected mosaic of habitats (woods, grassland, wildflower meadows, deadwood piles etc.) for our spiny friends to safely navigate around our Cornwall Campuses.

Thus far, our hard work has paid off with Penryn Campus receiving both Bronze (2020/21) and Silver (2021/22) level certifications with the Hedgehog Friendly Campus program, which is run by the British Hedgehog Preservation Society. Now, with confirmed sightings of hedgehogs, this year we are aiming to go for gold certification!

At FX Plus, we are committed to continue to identify more ways to nurture nature across our beautifully biodiverse campuses, which includes finding creative solutions to remove the potential risks faced by hedgehogs and other wildlife.

The Swap Shop Returns

September 18, 2023

Today, on Monday 18th September, the Swap Shop on Penryn campus reopened to encourage students and staff to pick up preloved items for FREE, instead of purchasing new. The last academic year saw the Swap Shop achieve great success as we celebrated nearly 100kg of items that had been donated, 240 items reused and over half a tonne of carbon saved!

We would like to emulate (if not exceed) this same success, which is why the Swap Shop has reopened for Welcome Week at the Sustainability Café. The Swap Shop is FREE for all to use and shall be open from 8:30am – 4:30pm, until Friday 22 September. It will then move to Fox Café on Falmouth Campus the following week, Monday 25 September – Friday 29 September.

Students and staff from Falmouth University, the University of Exeter, FX Plus and the SU are all invited to get involved, whether that’s through choosing preloved items from the Swap Shop itself or donating items in good used condition that others could make use of.

The Sustainability Team have set up Swap Shop Donation Points on both campuses, these are located in the Rosehill building (Falmouth) and AIR building (Penryn). If you have any surplus items that you think our campus community would love, such as unwanted stationary or lonely kitchenware, then please donate them the Swap Shop for re-homing.

The Swap Shop will also make regular appearances throughout the year, in the run-up to key holidays and special dates in the calendar to try and encourage you to shop sustainably by re-using and re-gifting quality used items.

FX Plus Bike Ride in Memory of Doug Walker

September 14, 2023

Last month (August 2023), our university community was saddened to learn of the untimely passing of our colleague Doug Walker. Doug was a revered member of the FX Plus IT & Digital Services Team for over 11 years and was diagnosed in early May 2023 with Acute Myeloid Leukaemia (AML). The type of AML that Doug had was extremely aggressive, and after a brave three-month battle with the cruel disease Doug passed away peacefully surrounded by his family. Doug leaves behind his partner, Charlotte, and two sons.

Colleagues from across our university partnership attended a memorial service last Saturday (9th September 2023), whereby the family asked not for flowers but for donations to help raise money for Leukaemia charities and bodies of medical research that aim to give people with a similar prognosis to Doug a better chance in the future. “All Doug wanted to do, and did, was help people. We hope you can help us honour him,” said Charlotte on the gofundme page set up for the cause.

With the support of Doug’s family, on Sunday 17th September, a group of five colleagues and friends aim to take on the challenging ride from Falmouth to Taunton (200 kilometres). Four of the group will attempt the full 200km distance, with the fifth member aiming to cover at least 120km, all to raise funds to help others fight AML in memory of Doug. The riders taking on the challenge include Rob Lawrence, David McAllister, Stuart Gaslonde, Tim Lawrence and Nathan Prisk. The team will also be followed by Gemma Prisk who has volunteered to drive the safety and support vehicle.

Rob Lawrence, the organiser of the 200km bike ride, said: “Soon after we discovered that Doug was ill, we wanted to help. We planned this challenge as a fundraising event for Doug, hoping to raise money for research into AML and to show support for Doug and his family. Sadly, AML took Doug far more quickly than any of us could have anticipated. Doug and Charlotte faced AML head on with incredible courage and dignity, and we want to honour that by completing this challenge – in Doug’s memory.”

The team of riders will set off from Falmouth campus at 07:00 on Sunday 17th September. If you would like to support them, please donate via the family’s gofundme page. You can also check out the full cycle route here. Do join the ride by popping out and giving the team a wave if you see them passing.
